Cardiovasculair diseases are worldwide the number one cause of death. Scientific research for causes and appropriate medication is already performed at a high scale. Andromed has a broad experience in this area of research.
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fatty substance which is needed by the body to build cells and hormones. Without cholesterol the body can't function properly. However, too much cholesterol is detrimental. The liver makes the most of cholesterol, a small part is being extracted directly from food. Mostly, the body makes precisely the right amount of cholesterol which is needed to function properly.
Good and bad cholesterol
Oil and fat don't dissolve in water. This is the same for fat and cholesterol in the blood. Small pellets of cholesterol are therefore surrounded by a layer of proteins. This the way cholesterol is transported in blood. The two most important protein-cholesterolparts are LDL and HDL. HDL is the good cholesterol and LDL the bad cholesterol.
Triglycerides
Triglycerides are another kind of fat, but is entwined with cholesterol. Triglycerides are extracted from your food. In the body they are stored in the fattissue, used as an energy source, and are being used by the liver to produce protein-cholesterolparts. A surplus is excreted by the liver through bile acids. The liver is also capable of making triglycerides from a surplus of carbohydrates, sugars and alcohol. A high triglyceride level in the blood is detrimental.
In the near future Andromed will start a trial, for which we are looking for people with a high triglyceride level. In case you wan't to participate, you can fill out the 'Interested-form' on our homepage.
